Identifying Signs of Problem Gambling
Gambling can be a fun pastime, but for some people it becomes a problem. Keeping a few simple habits in mind helps you stay in control and enjoy your play safely. The reminders below are worth keeping close during any session at WinSpirit.
- Treat gambling as entertainment, not a way to make money
- Stay mindful of your losses, and avoid trying to chase them back
- Only gamble an amount you are comfortable losing
- Keep track of the time and money you spend playing
- Take a break whenever you need one by temporarily suspending your account
- Reach out for help if gambling starts to feel like a problem
Assessing Your Gambling Habits — Self-Check
If you are concerned about your gambling, taking a few quiet moments to reflect can help. Consider the questions below honestly. There are no right or wrong answers here, only useful insight into your own habits.
- Do you ever miss work, school, or other obligations in order to gamble?
- Do you gamble mainly to pass the time or relieve boredom?
- Do you often gamble alone for long stretches?
- Have people close to you expressed concern about your gambling?
- Has your interest in hobbies, family, or friends faded because of gambling?
- Have you lied about how much time or money you spend gambling?
- Have you borrowed money, or felt tempted to, in order to keep gambling?
- Are you reluctant to spend your “gambling money” on anything else?
- Do you often keep playing until your funds are gone?
- After losing, do you feel an urgent need to win it back straight away?
- Do stress, low mood, or disappointment push you toward gambling?
If several of these sound familiar, you may be developing a gambling problem, and support is available. The next section lists free, confidential services you can contact whenever you are ready.
Accessing Gambling Support Services
Many organisations offer free, confidential, and non-judgemental help for anyone affected by gambling, whether it is your own play or someone you care about. Canadian services are listed first, with international options after them.
- ConnexOntario (Ontario) — 1-866-531-2600, or text CONNEX to 247247. Free, confidential, and available 24/7, it connects you to local counselling and support in many languages (connexontario.ca)
- Responsible Gambling Council — responsiblegambling.org. A Canadian non-profit with safer-play tools and a directory of every provincial and territorial helpline
- CAMH (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health) — 1-800-463-2338. Specialised assessment and treatment for gambling-related concerns
- Provincial lines — for example, Quebec’s Jeu : aide et référence (1-800-461-0140) and the Saskatchewan Problem Gambling Helpline (1-800-306-6789); the Responsible Gambling Council directory lists the rest
- International options — Gambling Therapy (gamblingtherapy.org), GamCare (gamcare.org.uk), and Gamblers Anonymous (gamblersanonymous.org)
Every one of these services is free, confidential, and there to listen without judgement.
Setting Limits — Deposit & Loss
Limits are the simplest way to stay in control of your time and money, and setting one before you start playing is among the most effective habits for keeping a session within budget. You can set them in the Limits tab of your profile (Profile > Limits) for a day, a week, or a month. You can change a limit whenever you like. A decrease takes effect immediately, while an increase or cancellation applies within 24 hours after you confirm it on the WinSpirit website. If you need a hand, contact Support on live chat or by email at [email protected].
Deposit limit — caps how much you can deposit per day, week, or month. Only successful deposits count toward it.
Loss limit — caps how much you can lose per day, week, or month. It is calculated as Loss = Bets − Wins, and it includes both real and bonus money, across casino and sports.
One point is worth understanding clearly. The loss limit is based on the initial limit sum, not on later winnings. For example, if you deposit 50 CAD, set a 10 CAD loss limit, and then win 1,000 CAD, you can still lose more than 10 CAD from that 1,000 CAD balance, because the limit is measured against the initial sum rather than the winnings.
Taking a Break — Cooling-Off & Self-Exclusion
Taking a break is a healthy, normal choice, and WinSpirit makes it straightforward. You can start a 24-hour cooling-off period directly in your profile, or by speaking with the Support team on live chat. During a cooling-off period you cannot place bets or make deposits, but you can still log in and withdraw any available funds.
When the 24-hour cooling-off period ends, you can request a self-exclusion for a longer term: 1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, or indefinitely. While a self-exclusion is active, betting and deposits stay blocked for the full term you choose. If a cooling-off period is already active on your account, a self-exclusion request can only be submitted after that period expires.
In Ontario, you can also use BetGuard, the free central self-exclusion tool from iGaming Ontario, to opt out of every regulated Ontario gambling site at once (care line 1-833-776-7171).
Keeping Minors Safe from Gambling
Gambling at WinSpirit is strictly for adults. You must be at least 18, and 19 in the provinces where that is the legal minimum, so check the age that applies where you live. Every player must give honest information about their age when registering. Any winnings from an under-age account are forfeited and may lead to civil or criminal action, and accounts that misrepresent age are blacklisted.
If children share your device, two third-party tools can help keep them away from gambling sites. Gamban (gamban.com) lets you block gambling sites for yourself, and Net Nanny (netnanny.com) helps parents block access for minors. Please also log out whenever you are not playing.
Understanding the Risks of Gaming
Knowing what makes gambling risky helps you play more mindfully. A few design factors can quietly raise the risk:
- Speed — the shorter the gap between an action and its result, the higher the risk
- Sound and design — immersive effects are built to hold your attention and can encourage longer play
- Increasing stakes — raising bets for extra excitement can lead to a loss of control
- The chance to win — small wins can create a false impression that the odds have improved
- Continuous gaming — long, unbroken sessions strain both willpower and budget
It also helps to understand how the games actually work. Casino games run on a random number generator, so every spin or round is independent of the last. Luck has no memory, and no system can change a random outcome. Skill-based games such as blackjack, poker, and sports betting let your decisions matter, but a built-in house edge means the odds still favour the casino over time. There is no reliable strategy for winning, so the safest approach is to treat gambling as paid entertainment.
Contact & Account Tools
If you ever need to act, help is close at hand. Set a deposit or loss limit, start a cooling-off period, or request self-exclusion in Profile > Limits. And if gambling stops being fun, contact ConnexOntario free and confidentially at 1-866-531-2600, or text CONNEX to 247247.
Please play responsibly. You must be of legal age to gamble — 18+, or 19+ in some Canadian provinces.
